Day 3: Today we got up early and made cutouts for dolls for the kids to sew while their parents worked. We also made demonstrations of a type of zig-zag quilt for the more advanced sewers to make on the machine. The kids had a lot of fun making the dolls and they added hair, eyes, and they even gave them names. Once they had finished with the dolls they worked on applique and they even got the concept of cutting out shapes and making them into a picture. The older women also did some applique and worked on making quilts. The very little kids had fun coloring and listening to books read to them in English and in Creole. We tacked some of the finished applique projects onto a board so that the women would get an idea of how we would turn them all into a quilt.
After sewing we had a lunch of beans and rice with fresh vegetables. We then got into John’s car and drove up a very steep and bumpy road to reach the destination of our walk. We walked for about two hours up and down the hills and along steep paths. There were incredibly spectacular and picturesque views from the tops of the mountains. We stopped at the half way point of our walked and looked at some green houses that the Haitians had built on the side of one of the mountains. We also picked Loquats from some of the trees and even though they weren’t completely ripe they were still very delicious.
At the end of our walk we drove through the village and saw some people playing with the already well used soccer ball, and we decided to play a pick-up game with them. Although they were much better than us and the ball kept rolling off the sides of the hills we still were able to hold our own. It was very fun and we even had some cheerleaders who were the little girls who had sewed with us from earlier in the day. The especially liked it when we either scored a goal or fell over. They walked us all the way back to the Currelly’s once the game was over laughing and holding hands.
I love following your trip online. I especially like seeing the pictures. Keep up the good work.
